Tips for Stunning Shots in Sun, Sand, and Surf

The beach is one of the most stunning locations for model photography, but it can also be a challenging environment. Harsh sunlight, sand, and unpredictable weather can make it tricky to get the perfect shot. However, with the right approach, you can use these elements to your advantage and create captivating images that stand out. Let me share my best tips to help you master model photography on the beach.

The beach offers a naturally beautiful backdrop, but it’s not without its challenges. Lighting, positioning, and even managing sand can affect your photos.

Let me take you through a few tried-and-tested tips that have worked for me, so you can make your next beach shoot a success.

1. Utilise Natural Light

At the beach, natural light is your greatest asset—but only if you know how to use it. The best times for beach photography are early morning or late afternoon, also known as the “golden hours.”

During these times, the sunlight is softer, creating a warm glow that enhances skin tones and provides a natural, flattering light for your model.

Midday sunlight can be harsh and cast strong shadows, so if you have no choice but to shoot in the middle of the day, find shaded areas or use a diffuser to soften the light.

You can also play with backlighting, using the sun as a rim light behind your model for a dreamy, sunlit halo effect.

2. Plan for Wind and Weather

Weather can change quickly by the sea, so always check the forecast before you head out. Wind can be both an advantage and a challenge.

It can add movement to your model’s hair and clothing, but strong gusts may make it difficult for your model to pose comfortably.

Bring hair clips or scarves to manage hair when the wind picks up.

If the weather turns cloudy, don’t worry—clouds can act as a natural diffuser, giving you soft, even light that’s perfect for portraits.

Make sure you have backup plans and props, like an umbrella, to keep the shoot on track regardless of conditions.

3. Use the Beach as a Backdrop

The beach offers plenty of natural beauty, so use the surroundings to your advantage. Incorporate elements like the water, dunes, rocks, and even beach umbrellas into your composition.

Play with different angles and perspectives—shoot low to capture more of the sky, or get closer to the ground to emphasise the vastness of the ocean.

Be mindful of the horizon line, as an uneven horizon can make your image feel off-balance. Keep it straight and use it to add depth to your composition.

4. Keep Your Model Comfortable

Shooting on the beach means working in heat, wind, and possibly cold water. Make sure your model is comfortable by planning breaks and bringing along water, sunscreen, and a towel.

If they’re comfortable, it will show in the photos.

Also, encourage your model to interact naturally with the environment—walking along the shore, splashing water, or lounging on the sand can create more candid, relaxed shots.

5. Experiment with Silhouettes and Shadows

The beach is a perfect spot to experiment with silhouette photography, especially during sunrise or sunset.

Place your model between the camera and the sun, exposing for the background to create a striking silhouette.

It’s a simple but effective way to add variety to your shoot and create more dramatic, artistic images.

Shadows are another feature you can use creatively.

Try positioning your model so their shadow stretches out across the sand, adding an extra layer of depth and intrigue to your composition.

6. Protect Your Gear

Sand and saltwater can wreak havoc on your camera and lenses, so take precautions. Use a UV filter to protect your lens from scratches, and keep your camera in a protective case when not in use. A lens cleaning kit will come in handy to wipe away any stray sand or water droplets.

Be mindful of where you set your gear down—placing it directly in the sand is an easy way to get it dirty or damaged. If possible, bring a towel or blanket to lay your equipment on.

7. Wardrobe and Styling Tips

Choose light, flowing fabrics that complement the beach environment.

Dresses, loose tops, or sarongs look amazing when they catch the breeze. For a more playful look, swimsuits with accessories like wide-brimmed hats or oversized sunglasses can pop against the sandy background.

Bright colours like red, yellow, or turquoise create a great contrast against the neutral tones of the sand and ocean.

If you’re going for a more natural, serene vibe, whites, beiges, and light pastels work well.
