Modelling Agencies Brisbane

This is such a hot topic for models, aspiring models, and even photographers like myself.

I’ve had my fair share of experiences with Brisbane modelling agencies, and I want to share what I’ve learned—both from personal experience and from conversations with those in the industry.

As a local Brisbane photographer I have, at times, reached out to Brisbane modelling agencies and some of their listed models directly to arrange Time for Print (TFP) photoshoots and test shoots.

I mean, development models and even experienced models need to keep their portfolios updated so a free shoot with a local Brisbane photographer helps us both, right?

Well not so far! Model agencies don’t respond to emails and models signed to some local agents aren’t allowed to do test shoots except with permission – which is rarely given.

The Brisbane model agencies that I have come across are so busy or self-important that they just don’t really care about responding to enquiries let alone signing off on test shoots and portfolio development.

Save one (to date). The best one I’ve come across so far is Monique from Diversity Models on the Gold Coast. She’s a lovely person and a great role model herself. Give her a call if you haven’t yet signed with anyone.

Now back to the big reveal and what I think models should do if they have the chance.

Don’t sign with an agency until you read the fine print.

Sitting around on weekends waiting for your agent to call and say you have a job is fine if you are otherwise busy and your portfolio is up to date. But if you’d rather be networking and practising your poses with photoshoots with local photographers than don’t sign until you know the limitations the agency is going to impose on your spare time.

Take a chance and break the rules

When you sign with an agency, you’re giving them a level of control over your career. But remember, an agent only makes money when you land jobs—so if they’re restricting you from test shoots or networking opportunities, they might actually be limiting your potential (and their own earnings).

And here’s a little secret: if we do a test shoot together, you can always use those images to approach a better modelling agency—one that actually supports your career. Need a referral? Just ask me.

Go, Freelancer

One alternative is going freelance. Instead of being tied down by restrictive contracts, you can take charge of your own career. You can still accept agency jobs if they come your way, but in the meantime, you’re free to find your own clients, build your personal brand, and collaborate with photographers, stylists, and brands on your own terms.

At the end of the day, no one is going to look out for your career like you will.
