For fashion photographers, having the right equipment is essential to capturing those perfect shots that define a brand or a model’s portfolio.
At Matthew Cornell Photography, we know the tools you use can make all the difference. From high-end cameras and lenses to lighting and accessories, here is a guide to the essential gear every fashion photographer should have in their kit.
Whether you’re just starting out or looking to upgrade, these tools will help you achieve professional, high-quality results.
1. High-Resolution Camera
At the heart of every fashion photoshoot is a high-resolution camera. Popular choices include:
- Canon EOS R5: Known for its 45MP resolution, excellent autofocus, and 8K video capabilities, ideal for high-end shoots.
- Fujifilm GFX 100S: A medium-format option delivering stunning 102MP images, perfect for detailed fashion work, though it’s bulkier and pricier.
- Sony A7R V: A versatile full-frame camera with outstanding resolution and dynamic range, great for both studio and outdoor shoots. Each camera offers unique strengths, so the choice depends on your budget and shooting style. Beginners may consider the Canon EOS RP, which is more affordable but still delivers great results for entry-level photographers.
2. Versatile Lenses
A collection of lenses is crucial for achieving diverse shots. Specific examples include:
- 50mm f/1.2: Perfect for portraits with creamy bokeh and sharp subject focus.
- 85mm f/1.4: Ideal for close-ups, highlighting intricate details of clothing and accessories.
- 24-70mm f/2.8: A versatile zoom lens for everything from full-body shots to environmental portraits. My favourite lens is the Sigma Art 38mm F1.4. Wide open at F1.4, it delivers a beautifully blurred background while keeping the subject sharp and detailed. In the studio, I adjust the aperture to ensure both the model and fashion are fully in focus. The choice of lens depends on the desired mood and composition.
For those just starting out, budget-friendly options like the Canon 50mm f/1.8 can be a fantastic addition to your kit.
3. Studio Lighting Setup
Controlled lighting is integral to fashion photography. Techniques to master include:
- Rembrandt Lighting: Creates a dramatic look with a triangle of light under one eye; achieve this with a single light angled at 45 degrees from the subject.
- Butterfly Lighting: Produces a flattering, even light with a shadow under the nose; use a softbox or beauty dish directly in front and above the subject.
- Split Lighting: Ideal for edgy, high-contrast shots; place the light source to illuminate only one side of the subject’s face.
I use a combination of a Godox 300Ws strobe on a light stand, my studio ceiling as a reflector, and white panels to bounce light. For on-location shoots, I rely on a Godox flash with a remote trigger. Learning to adapt these setups to suit your subject and theme is key to achieving stunning visuals.
4. Tripods and Camera Support
Stability is key to capturing sharp images. Fashion photographers use tripods and other camera support equipment to maintain stability during shoots, particularly in studio settings where precise positioning is essential. I use a tripod for both outdoor and indoor shoots and opt for a stabilised lens when taking longer shots.
For beginners, affordable tripods like the Manfrotto Compact Action are a good starting point before upgrading to more robust models like the Gitzo Systematic Series.
5. Editing Software
Post-processing is an integral part of fashion photography. Professionals use advanced editing software like Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to fine-tune images, adjust colours, and perfect the overall aesthetics of the final photographs.
I use Lightroom Classic for all my editing. It’s fast, clever, and produces beautiful results. While it’s not free, Lightroom Classic far surpasses the free software bundled with my Canon camera, offering vastly more advanced image manipulation tools. Lightroom allows you to manipulate exposure, colour grading, and fine details with ease.

6. Styling Accessories
Beyond the camera and lighting, fashion photographers often utilise styling accessories. Concrete tips include:
- Use Colour Theory: Choose props and backdrops with complementary or contrasting colours for visual impact.
- Incorporate Textures and Patterns: Add fabrics, rugs, or layered clothing to create depth and interest.
- Set a Mood: Think about the story you want the image to tell and select accessories accordingly.
Need ideas for styling props? Look around! I recently borrowed a white rose from my wife’s garden for a shoot. Chairs from your kitchen, a child’s magic wand, or even pets can make a world of difference. Adding layers of fabric or integrating outdoor elements such as leaves or driftwood can also create unique effects. With a bit of creativity, you can transform simple settings into vibrant masterpieces.
7. Professional Wardrobe Accessories
To capture the essence of fashion, many fashion photographers have an array of wardrobe accessories on hand. Items could include:
- Clothing Clips: To ensure the perfect fit during the shoot.
- Garment Steamers: To remove wrinkles and present clothing in its best light.
- Portable Changing Tents: Useful for on-location shoots to offer privacy and quick outfit changes.
Additionally, incorporating eco-friendly practices, such as using sustainable materials for backdrops or working with brands that prioritise ethical fashion, can elevate your work in line with modern trends.
8. Real-Life Scenarios
Let’s put this into perspective. In one of my recent shoots, I used butterfly lighting to enhance a model’s features for a high-end jewellery brand. The 50mm lens allowed me to capture the intricate details of the necklace while keeping the overall image soft and polished. The addition of a velvet backdrop added richness to the composition, helping the client’s product truly shine.
9. Gear Maintenance Tips
Maintaining your equipment ensures it lasts longer and performs optimally. Here are a few tips:
- Clean Lenses Regularly: Use a lens blower and microfibre cloth to remove dust and smudges.
- Check Camera Sensors: Clean the sensor using a specialised cleaning kit to avoid spots in your images.
- Store Properly: Use padded bags or cases to protect your gear from impact and weather conditions.
- Battery Care: Avoid letting batteries fully deplete and store them in a cool, dry place.
