How to Start Your Modeling Journey in Australia

Becoming a model in Australia involves a specific path, and you can learn more about it here.

When you’re ready, let’s have a chat about portfolios, Z-cards, comp cards, and model reels.

How to Book Your Modelling Portfolio Photos

Get in touch with us to receive a personalised quote or fill out our Model Contact Form with your details.

Note that models under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian or parent to all photoshoots and interviews.

How much should a model portfolio cost?

In Australia, the cost of a model portfolio can vary depending on the photographer’s experience, location, and the services included in the photography package.

Experienced models can expect to pay between $500 and $2000 for a portfolio package with 20 to 30 edited images and a couple of changes of clothes.

Our Brisbane studio has a special introductory package for beginner models: we will photograph you and send you at least 10 edited mages for no charge. It’s our way of helping more people join our fashion industry. (and if you write a nice review for us we all win).

For experienced models, we charge a modest fee for a professional set of portfolio photos. Send us a DM on Instagram to find out more.

Remember to communicate your specific needs and expectations to your photographer before the photoshoot. In this way, you can both prepare for the photoshoot and concentrate on capturing photos that capture your personality and versatility.

Do beginner models need a portfolio?

Absolutely.

A portfolio is a crucial tool for beginner models as it serves as a visual resume, showcasing your range, versatility, and potential to prospective clients and agencies.

Brisbane portfolio photography for Queensland models

Here are some reasons why a portfolio is essential for beginner models:

  1. Introduction to Clients and Agencies: A portfolio introduces you to potential clients, fashion brands, advertising agencies, and modeling companies. It is often the first thing they see before deciding whether to work with you.
  2. Showcasing Versatility: A portfolio allows you to display your versatility as a model. Including a variety of looks, poses, and styles demonstrates your ability to adapt to different projects and requirements.
  3. Building Confidence: Creating a portfolio can boost your confidence as a model. It allows you to practice in front of the camera in a less stressful environment. You can take the time to explore your strengths and learn how to better present yourself to the industry.
  4. Online Presence: In today’s digital age, having an online portfolio is crucial. It provides a convenient way for potential clients to view your work, making it easier for them to consider you for projects.
  5. Networking and TFP Opportunities: A portfolio is essential for networking and securing TFP (Time for Print) collaborations with photographers. These collaborations can help you gain valuable experience and expand your portfolio – but photographers like to receive recognition for their work too – so a model that tags in their photographer or gives the photographer praise is more likely to easily find photographers that will take part in an unpaid collaboration.

As you embark on your modeling journey, consider investing time and effort into curating a portfolio that reflects your unique style and personality. If you ever need assistance or advice on creating a standout portfolio, feel free to reach out. I’m based 9in Northgate, Brisbane and here to help capture your best moments and contribute to your success in the modeling industry.

How can you make a modeling portfolio with no experience?

Don’t worry, not having experience doesn’t stop you from building a fantastic modeling portfolio! Here are some steps you can take.

Self-Discovery & Preparation

  • Get clear on your niche: Explore different types of modeling like fashion, commercial, fitness, print, etc. Find what resonates with your look, personality, and interests.
  • Define your strengths: Hone in on your best features and figure out how to highlight them in photos. Practice different poses and expressions in front of the mirror.
  • Invest in basic essentials: Build a simple wardrobe with versatile clothing that fits you well and complements your style. Choose neutral and solid colors for headshots and test shoots.

DIY Photoshoots

  • Gather your resources: You don’t need fancy equipment! Start with a friend or family member as your photographer. Use natural light in well-lit locations like parks, beaches, or your own home.
  • Experiment with different styles: Try various outfits, poses, and expressions to showcase your range. Capture natural candid moments alongside more posed shots.
  • Edit strategically: Consider basic editing tools to adjust brightness, contrast, and cropping. Avoid heavy editing that alters your appearance drastically.

Content Curation

  • Select your best shots: Choose photos that represent your best angles, strengths, and versatility. Aim for a diversity of looks and expressions.
  • Create a platform: Upload your photos to an online portfolio website or create a dedicated Instagram account. Consider platforms like Wix, Squarespace, or Model Mayhem.
  • Craft a compelling bio: Write a short bio that introduces yourself, your modeling aspirations, and any relevant skills or interests. Highlight your unique qualities and personality.

Network & Get Out There

  • Connect with industry professionals: Attend local photographic modeling workshops, join online forums, or reach out to photographers and agencies in your area. Be professional and proactive in your communication.
  • Participate in open calls and contests: Look for beginner-friendly opportunities to gain experience and exposure. Don’t be discouraged by rejections, focus on learning and improving.
  • Build your social media presence: Be active on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, but maintain professionalism and quality content. Engage with relevant accounts and communities.

Bonus Tips

  • Take acting or modeling classes: These can help you develop confidence, camera presence, and posing skills.
  • Stay fit and healthy: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle reflects well in your photos and boosts your overall confidence.
  • Be patient and persistent: Building a successful career in modeling takes time and dedication. Stay positive, work hard, and keep pushing yourself to improve.

Remember, having no experience is not a disadvantage. Your drive, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn are key qualities that agencies and photographers look for.

What do I need for a modeling portfolio?

Building a stellar modeling portfolio package is crucial for grabbing the attention of agencies and photographers. Here’s what you need to consider:

Visual Content

  • Variety of Shots: Show your range! Include headshots showcasing your facial features, full-body shots highlighting your figure, and lifestyle shots demonstrating your personality and movement. Aim for diversity in backgrounds, outfits, and poses.
  • Quality Over Quantity: Choose exceptional photos over a large quantity of mediocre ones. Prioritise sharp focus, good lighting, and flattering angles. Invest in basic editing skills to enhance your photos without major alterations.
  • Professional Look: While DIY shoots are okay initially, consider collaborating with a professional photographer in the long run. Their expertise can transform and elevate your portfolio to the next level.

Presentation

  • Choose your platform: Upload your photos to a dedicated website, online portfolio platform (Wix, Squarespace), or even a curated Instagram account. Ensure a clean and user-friendly layout that easily showcases your work.
  • Bio and Contact Information: Briefly introduce yourself, highlighting your unique qualities, experience (if any), and modeling aspirations. Include clear contact information like email and phone number.
  • Keep it Updated: Your portfolio is a living document. Regularly add new photos to showcase your development and keep it fresh for viewers.

Additional Tips

  • Tailor your portfolio to specific agencies or brands. Research their preferences and highlight relevant photos that align with their aesthetic.
  • Get feedback from industry professionals. Attend workshops, connect with photographers, and seek constructive criticism to improve your portfolio and overall presentation.
  • Stay confident and persistent. Building a strong portfolio takes time and effort. Keep working hard, learning from your experiences, and showcasing your potential with every shot.

Don’t Forget

  • Invest in basic modeling skills: Workshops or online tutorials can teach you posing techniques, facial expressions, and how to move naturally in front of the camera. For models in South East Queensland, we recommend the model training sessions by Huxnboss.
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Your physical fitness and overall well-being will shine through in your photos.

Remember, your portfolio is your first impression in the modeling world. Make it count by showcasing your personality, versatility, and potential through high-quality visuals and professional presentation.

    • Take photography courses or workshops to enhance your technical skills and gain insights into the specific requirements of fashion photography.
    • Remember to also build skills in the administration of a business including marketing and people interaction skills.
